Getting Started

Getting Started - Overview

When a student enrolls in at least one Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSCE) course, an account is created allowing access to the CSCE computing resources.

Accounts are typically created by the end of the first week of classes. The accounts are created automatically based on enrollment, but the passwords are initially generated at random. Before you can use your account, you must set a password by going to https://students.csci.unt.edu/reset.php.

The CSCE account provides the following:

Shell Access
The CSCE account provides access to computers for course and research related projects.

The computer systems allow access from both on and off campus computers.
File Storage
Each student is alloted space to store course and research related material. The file storage space is automatically made available when you login to one of the CSCE computer systems.
Web Page
Each student has the ability to create a personal web page which is served from the Computer Science departmental web server.

Before your begin

If you take the time to understanding a few details about the operating systems used, and the setup of the computing resources the department provides, it will help to make the transition easier.

To facilitate coursework, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering uses Debian GNU/Linux, which is freely available. Debian GNU/Linux is based off the capabilities of Unix, a commercial operating system, which was developed by system developers at AT&T.

These computing resources are available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. Only remote access is made available to the students. Local access to the computing resources is not allowed in order to provide greater stability.

Read the additional information in the links on the left to learn more about using your account.

Account Expiration

Accounts remain active as long as the student continues to enroll in CSCE courses. If a student does not enroll in a CSCE course for two consecutive long semesters, the account will expire.

Getting Help

The E-Support web page will probably answer the majority of your questions, and should be the first place that you should look.

Along with having answers customized to the computing environment inside of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the E-Support web page is available 24 hours a day.

If the answers to your questions are not found on the E-Support web page, you can send email to csesupport@unt.edu or drop by F208 in the Research Park between the hours of 8-12 or 1-5.
